Passwords Concepts and Processes
When adding a new user on the User
Security General Tab, a password must be established so the user can
log on to the system. At any time, the user can change the password on
the Change Password Tab. Also, users
with permission to modify user accounts can change the password for a
user account on the User Security General Tab.
Also, users with the appropriate permissions can:
- set an expiration
period for all passwords.
- exclude individual
users from the password expiration period.
- expire passwords
manually for all users at once.
- expire a password
manually for an individual user
- reset a locked password.
Setting a Password Expiration Period
Users with the System Settings
permission can establish a password expiration period
for all user passwords on the Security
Tab. This includes setting the number of days passwords can
be used before expiring (for example, 45 days) and the number of days
notice users will receive when the password is due to expire (for example,
10 days).
The first time the user logs on
to the system after the password expires, a message notifies the user
that the password has expired. To continue, the user is required to create
a new password.
Excluding Individual Users from the Password
Expiration Period
Users with the Modify Users permission can exclude individual
users from the password expiration period so that their passwords will
never automatically expire. For example, if you want to set the maximum
password age to 45 days for most users, but do not want the limit to apply
to a supervisor, you can set the supervisor's password so that it never
expires.
To do so, select the Password
never expires check box for the user account on the User
Security General Tab.
Expiring Passwords Manually for All Users
Users with the Expire Passwords permission can manually
expire all passwords at any time from the Expire
Passwords Tab. This will reset the expiration period for all
users. You can expire passwords for all users (including users with non-expiring
passwords) or all passwords except those for users with non-expiring passwords.
Expiring a Password Manually for an Individual
User
Users with the Modify Users permission can manually expire
a password for an individual user. To do so, select the User
must change password at next logon check box on the User Security
General Tab for the user account.
Resetting a Locked Password
Users with the Unlock Users permission can enable a user, who is locked out of the system, to log in again by resetting their password and unlocking their user name, and then providing the new password to the user, who must change the password at next login.
You can also unlock a user by unchecking the Locked check box on the User Security General Tab.
